New Wings for Talula!

new wings

Talula Shimmerwing, the Queen of the Fairies, noticed that her shoulders got very itchy recently, a certain sign that new wings were on the way.

You likely know, but fairies sometimes get new wings. It happens frequently for some fairies, and less often for others. Talula says she knows a fairy that grows a new pair every moon! I can hardly belive that.

When fairy wings molt, fairies like to take some time for themselves as the molting happens. We call this cocooning. Cocooning is similar to what butterflies do, as we take quiet time and don’t get too concerned with the outside world, however I must say it looks much easier. Talula likes to spend time in the Fairy Lands, curled up in her favourite flower, creating some sky paintings, and nibbling on (far too many) fairy cakes.

When our wings molt, our new wings are usually larger, and even more sparkly and magnificent. Here are Talula’s new wings! Do you love them as much as we do?

Talula would like you to know that she can only show these wings when she visits outdoors or in larger spaces – when inside, she magically makes them smaller so she can still fit into the room.

Do humans like to cocoon as well? We would love to hear!

Wishing you a day of Magic and Wonder,

The Fairies

You may know, fairies love creating and dreaming up things. We love to have an idea and use our magic to make it into reality – it is part of how fairy magic works. It is easier in the Fairy Lands than in the Human Realm, as what we imagine we can create in a twinkle of a star.

It usually takes more time in the Human Realm, matter being what it is. Until now… this coloring book is like a bridge to the Fairy Lands, where you can create whatever you can imagine!

Creativity is such a foundational skill. Fairies believe that nurturing it and honouring it leads to a sense of empowerment, wonder, possibility, and joy! It leads us deeper into who we are and connects us with our essential selves. Children that have their creativity nurtured lead to adults who are in full capacity to create and dream, and see possibility and resourcefulness in their lives.

We love nurturing creativity and imaginations, in our parties and in this coloring book. It makes us happy to see that feeling of joy, focus, wonder, and openness that creativity engenders.

Can you believe it? The Holiday Season is here! This will definitely be a different kind of year for everyone, and I sincerely hope you and your family are happy and healthy.

Although it has its challenges, I’ve personally treasured these times in many ways. I love small groups and being outdoors, as it feels very connected to the magic of nature and the fairies.

Fairy Visits are something I have particularly loved – they are surprise meetings with a Fairy in a nearby park or backyard. With thirty minutes of fairy fun, the Fairy follows the interests of the child or children, to make it personalized.

On a recent visit to a Vancouver park, Talula Shimmerwing met Zoya, who was turning six. The park happened to have a fiddler and guitarist practising, and we danced to the beautiful music! It was truly magical. We met a lovely old tree, made Zoya an Honorary Fairy, then after a story and a game, Talula said farewell and headed back to the Fairy Lands.

After the visit, Zoya said: “I wanted to meet a fairy for my birthday and I did!” Now that made Talula happy.

You might be thinking, but it’s so cold out! It’s true, it is getting cooler, but it isn’t too cold for fairies. Honestly! Well, unless it is sub-zero. Then our wings do freeze a little. Dancing and playing with children is like going for a run, so we keep warm. As long as it is dry, we can meet outdoors somewhere for a fairy good time.

The Fairy follows all current COVID protocols, keeps at a distance, and can wear a mask if requested. And, this may be something you’d rather keep in mind for when restrictions loosen.

We are making it as easy as we can by having no-fee postponements and cancellations, so we can check weather on the day and adjust times and dates as needed.

Wishing you a Sparkling Season!

If you’re wondering what do next with the kids this summer, the Queen of the Fairies is here to help!

We’re so excited to share that Talula Shimmerwing – known for enchanting children throughout Metro Vancouver and beyond – will visit a North Vancouver fairy garden this month to share the play and magic of the fairies.

Talula is teaming up with Leslee Tessman, a local resident and Fairy Grandmother, who has created an elaborate fairy garden in her front yard. Little did she know it would attract the Queen of the Fairies!

Talula will be welcoming visitors to Leslee’s garden at 1493 Kilmer Rd. in North Vancouver on three consecutive Wednesdays, Aug. 12, 19 and 26, from  3:30-4:30 p.m. This will be a free event, although donations to Westcoast Family Center will be gratefully accepted.

Depending on number of attendees, adults are kindly asked to wear face masks and to wait in a line on the side of the road and Talula will visit with one family at a time in the garden, while respecting distancing.

Should the rain fairies be making merry, that day’s session will be unfortunately cancelled. Requests are already in for the sun fairies to do their magic.

Talula very much hopes to see you there!

So much has changed! Ability to see friends, go to school, and have birthday parties like before. It’s been a challenging time for everyone. I very much hope you are weathering the storm with safety and a delicious batch of fairy cakes.

And some things don’t change. Little ones still have birthdays, they still love play and magic, and to connect with friends. An online party might be the only way that you feel safe to do that.

When this COVID situation started, to be honest I thought that I didn’t really want to do online parties, as I believed it just wouldn’t be as fun for everyone. It seemed like “Making do” with a bad situation. And to me, fun and magic are what it’s all about!

Then I asked, how can I make this even MORE fun and magical?

After some creative brainstorming I realized that this is an opportunity to get even more creative! Some ideas came from being inspired by other artists on social media, and some came directly from the Fairy Lands. For example, the idea of a Cape of Invisibility came to me by quite by accident, by following that magical path of joy and experimentation and the digital discovery that followed.

The secret behind it (you are sworn to secrecy here!) is that I have a green screen and with that, so much MAGIC can happen! The Cape of Invisibility works in real time during the party, and makes the fairy disappear! Only to reappear with a laugh…

Now I have given a number of online parties, and it’s true – it’s not quite the same. There is such joy to seeing friends (and fairies!) in person.

And it’s also true that it’s different, and they are amazing and fun and magical in their own way! There are wonderful things and opportunities for magic that can happen with an online party that aren’t possible in person.

There’s added benefits too: there is little work on the parent’s end – no food to buy and prepare, no decorations, no clean up, no having to do 20 things at once to make your wee one happy… a lot of time and expense is saved. And, an online party means that you can invite guests who don’t live in town – perhaps a cousin in another part of the country can join as well.

I can safely say that I now LOVE doing online parties! They are different, and they are wonderful. I feel the same sense of joy and connection with the children as I do at in person parties. Joy for me is my compass. And I know that when I am feeling joy, the children are usually feeling it too.

And, I am still learning and developing more fun ways I can use the screen as an instrument of play, to make parties and playdates their own unique wonderful experience. I am excited to see where this path will go.

Dragon Pox… also known as Coronavirus

Dragon Pox... also known as Coronavirus

Liam the Scary

In the Fairy Lands, we know and empathize that a nasty case of Dragon Pox has invaded the Human Realm.

With respect to the Covid-19 outbreak, this is a unique and unprecedented time for all, and In the Company of Fairies sends our caring wishes to those affected by the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 virus.

We are keeping note of Federal and Provincial Health updates, and are following all recommendations. In addition to existing health practises that we currently include at parties and events, which includes following stringent health recommendations for face painting from the Fraser Health Authority (ie, single use sponges, washing and sanitizing brushes in between each use, single-portion use of face paints), we want to make sure we are taking all appropriate precautions to ensure we do as much as possible to mitigate any possible spread of the virus.

As such, we are taking the following steps, effective immediately, until further notice:
1: We will not be doing any events or parties for more than 20 people.
2. Face painting will be done only on arms or hands, not on faces, to help children avoid touching their faces.
3. If a party or event needs to cancel or postpone due to new health recommendations, because someone present may have been exposed to the virus, or for concerns of social distancing, then no fees will be charged.

In addition to these items, we wish to assure you that we are taking precautions to prevent the spread of this virus, including washing and sanitizing hands and all props and surfaces frequently.

As this situation continues to develop we will evaluate often to see if there are additional steps we need to take. If so, those will be communicated here.

We do have gift certificates available for anyone who wishes to lend a hand to In the Company of Fairies through this period, and bring some magic at a future (healthier!) date.

Thank you very much for your kind support of the Fairies, and our sincere wishes for Abundant Health to you all!

Magic Moments

Magic Moments

I was at a fairy party recently, and there was a moment when time seemed to stop. I was dancing with the children, and the birthday girl wanted to sit and watch. She had a big smile on her face as she gazed out at her friends. The other children were laughing and jumping up and down to the song.

I felt so happy – full of love for the birthday girl, grateful to be creating such a moment and to be invited to come and share such a special day, and full of joy just at having fun.

It seemed as though the air was filled with light and sparkles, and there was a hushed stillness, even as everyone was dancing. It was like a freeze-frame of time stopping, and I knew that this is what it’s all about. It was a Magic Moment.

I heard later from the mom, who wrote “It’s such a gift to a parent to see your child so utterly happy.”

That is truly the best part of being a fairy. To create utter happiness. And the amazing part is, we all get to have that happiness- the birthday girl, the guests, me, and the parents watching it all unfold.

Happiness is contagious, and Magic Moments are the essence of what makes life truly wonderful. They may not be every moment, but they live on as a memory that we can reach for, whenever we need that feeling of magic and utter happiness in whatever moment we are currently in.

And then the moment becomes even longer, just like magic!
